Project Title: Effects of Traditional Agriculture on the Native Plant Pollination in a Biosphere Reserve
Abstract of Project :
Reconciling the often conflicting demands of agriculture and biodiversity conservation is a key global challenge for the future. Current research estimates about 35 per cent of the world's total food production and 75 per cent leading crops are dependent on animal pollinators. Hence loss or severe decline in biodiversity will endanger our food security. My study will investigate how large-scale traditional agriculture affects the pollination and reproduction of native plant species within Pineland Biosphere Reserve in New Jersey, USA. The outcome of this research will help in understanding how to integrate agriculture and conservation of native plants in heterogeneous landscapes. It would also help to advise land-use planners and stakeholders to plan relevant conservation actions.
